We’ve been anticipating for a long time to see Black Myth Wukong 2024 arrive, after so many trailers, and gameplay demonstrations, so much buzz was driving it. Especially for Epic Games just sponsoring them for their ubiquitous, new game engine; Unreal Engine 5. I wrote news on it a few months ago along with some other game news – AC Shadows, FF 7 Rebirth, and Rise of the Ronin.
As a result of so much painstaking effort into creating a world centered around both Chinese mythos and the ever-great inspiration for many fictional media, including Dragon Ball Z, and the Journey to the West novel, Black Myth Wukong 2024 is a monumental achievement. Delivering in world-building, visual galore, fast-paced gameplay, insane boss battles, and hours of fun.
Black Myth Wukong 2024 doesn’t supersede expectations of beating even the most lauded of PlayStation exclusives or the biggest souls’ games out there. It knew how to make its mark, well mostly for those who owned expensive rigs to get it running well too. Speaking of, 20 million Chinese players bought the game. Do they sell those GPUs at the bazaar?
Introducing The Mythical Monkey Himself
Black Myth Wukong 2024 is set right after the supposed death of Wukong, I play as his prophesized resurrection or successor of sorts. He has long shoes to fill, encountering some Yaoguai grunts, which escalates to battling giants and terrifying deities very early in the game. Combat is no slouch, while I have a few crazy moves, they had the aggression and numbers.
The bosses keep the momentum of becoming stronger going, each gets tougher one after the other. Hence, fighting the grunts, earning sparks to level up, unlocking abilities, getting stronger, you know, like Goku did. Not the Super Saiyan kind of way, but a lot better and that’s the charm of Black Myth Wukong 2024.
Instead, he has abilities that allow him to mix both his basic and strong attacks, stances change the attack types and patterns, he has spells that can freeze up enemies, warp attack enemies, transform into one of the bosses he fought, temporarily fighting anyone with different strength and attack types. Finally, the ultimate abilities, which I can use multiple of.
It’s not pure soul-like, yet wears the skin of God of War and Jedi Survivor. He can become progressively stronger till he reaches level 342. Which is based on the actual age of Sun Wukong before he died in the book and that detail was inserted in the most amazing way in Black Myth Wukong 2024. Mix and brew potions, upgrading equipment gear, and more unique items at his disposal.
Fixing all that is wrong with the land by fighting the Yaoguais having dominion over some of the sacred temples. His destiny takes him to places like Yellow Wind Ridge and beyond farther west of China. Revisiting all the most iconic areas, fully built with the latest Unreal Engine tech. Beaming with gorgeous, realistic detailing, luminant lighting and effects only possible through the extensive use of Ray-Tracing. Experience is going to cost you a lot, however.
Black Myth Wukong 2024: Through An Epic Tale
The regaling narrative of Black Myth Wukong 2024 has so many intricate characters to meet, including the Yaoguais I fought. Each, and every one of them in extension to the bits of storytelling, dialogue exposition, and the environments themselves immersing me strongly into its world.
Others lend a hand in new Wukong’s plight, brought to life by talented and experienced voice actors, bringing cadence to their work by capturing their likeliness from the main book itself and more. Sure, video games and cinema voiceovers have been in so many games that it’s hard not to find the right people. But they did a brilliant job in Black Myth Wukong 2024 nonetheless.
And if you’re considering touring, all the locations here are based on real-life places, landmarks of China. From the Wooden Pagoda of Ying County, The Terracotta Army to the Ancient Grottoes of Shaanxi, in fact, Shaanxi has so many places to explore that Black Myth Wukong 2024 is based on. If not, hey, that expensive PC sure is bringing that immersion to the screen, eh? Be sure to use the photo mode if you want a few scenic shots for yourself.
All those bosses, you’ll be fighting both Yaoguais and powerful deities themselves, all well-knowns like Erlang Shen, Black Bear Guai, Elder Jinchi, a brutal variant of Lingxuzi, Yellow Wind Sage, The Ratguais, Yellowbrow, Kang-Jin Loong, and so on. It’s not always a simple case of beating them to move on to the next one.
There’s so much storytelling going on in Black Myth Wukong 2024, including narrative twists and turns, but unfortunately, the prerequisite is you have already read the book to understand what’s going on. There are YT videos for this, would be better to visit that before playing the game which enrichens the experience further.
Black Myth Wukong 2024 Doesn’t Always Stick The Landing
Yeah, Black Myth Wukong 2024 is not a perfect game. There are gripes I have, and some hiccups as well. Combat gets a little tedious after prolonged hours, I also wish they implemented attack combos as fighting games did. The revolving stick used for defense against arrows and other attacks feels tacked on but is also a bit overpowering to use when smashing grunts, and useless against certain bosses. Then again, I probably never used it well too.
The open world in Black Myth Wukong is kind of a joke, considering there are many invincible walls I’ll have to deal with. It’s pretty super linear too, but easy to get to places with the shrine, your resting place. It does get challenging to find hidden pathways, but great surprises wait for those who do. It would also be nice if most encounters weren’t the same when grunts respawn.
Don’t get me started on the technical problems, there isn’t much if you’re one of the many who bought Nvidia GPUs. Unfortunately, I wasn’t. I own an RX 7700 XT, and dear god it chugs so badly. Turning Ray-Tracing off even makes it look very ugly with illumination problems, causing everything to render heavily contrasted dark and light. I’m sure there are fixes for this, a new driver just came out. But during my playthrough, it was a real headache.
