There are numerous films depicting blood, gore, and violence. Audiences love these movies for their darker features and contents. But what if that dark feature film is a musical! This is a combination that is very rare.
The field of rarity and uniqueness is the playground of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Need I say more? Yes, it is the 2007 musical feature film I am talking about. Another work of art by the eccentric duo Johnny and Tim is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. This film is a sublime example of the out-of-the-box genre of dark musical fantasy!
Johnny Depp & Tim Burton
As always, Tim created something marvellous, and Johnny portrayed the protagonist to perfection. The film proves the point that whenever we see in block letters ‘Directed by Tim Burton’ and ‘Starring Johnny Depp’, we know what to expect, but we don’t know what is coming. This is a thrilling and exciting dilemma in my personal experience!
I saw a ship sailing desperately against the tides when the curtains opened. It hit me at that moment, “Am I to witness a reworked Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean?”! Nope, not even a hint of that. Instead, what I witnessed was an entirely different and mesmerizing experience. When Johnny appeared with that low-pitched voice of his resounding the solemn and bone-chilling melody in it, it made me realize that this is going to be one of his most influential performances yet. And the sheer genius of Tim to start the story like that is what has me baffled still.
The Talented Team of Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Well, I have talked enough about the two hegemons, so let’s move on to the rest of the cast of Sweeny Todd. Playing the supporting but rather important characters are Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Timothy Spall. Watching Helena as Nelie Lovett was one of the best experiences of the film for me. Her fickle pride, desire for warm company, and betrayal of trust for infatuation were portrayed perfectly.
Alan proved why he was one of my most favorite antagonistic actors of all time. He played Judge Turpin‘s lustful and devious character rather pleasantly. Sacha was at it again with the role of Adolfo Pirelli. His wild and crazy acting mixed with mischievous dialogue delivery was really fun to watch. Spall’s performance was a stark resemblance to his Wormtail portrayal in Harry Potter. This was rather disappointing as he didn’t bring anything new to the plate.
The big-screen flick is an adaptation of the 1979 musical of the same name written by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. They did an amazing job with the screenplay providing a flowing storyline and perfectly timed backdrops.
Marvellous music by Sondheim and chthonic cinematography by Dariusz Wolsky give more substance to the film by increasing the thrilling enjoyment factor.
A Common Plot
The plot of Sweeny Todd reveals a horrifying story of injustice, betrayal and violence in Victorian London! The antagonistic protagonist is unjustly sent to prison, resulting in him vowing revenge. The vow is not only for the unjust, cruel punishment but also for a nobleman’s disgusting greed of lust that befell his wife and daughter. After finally returning from the crevices of hell on earth, he becomes Sweeney Todd. An alias he takes up as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He starts shaving the faces of many-a-men who are never seen again. Sweeney’s accomplice and partner in crime, the flirtatious Mrs Lovett, bakes diabolical meat pies with the flesh of the dead.
Are you with me yet? Or have I scared you off with the sinister storyline? If you are still here, I will continue.
Well, let’s not, actually! Please don’t curse at me now! Just watch the movie, and you will know the rest. You will witness a gruesome tale of revenge that turned the most gentle protagonist into a diabolical and sinister entity!
Why Watch Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street?
A story of revenge accompanied by the emotions of love, regret, sadness, emptiness and loneliness! Also, the unfair societal construct along with empathy, betrayal and pride! All of these are depicted by lyrical music and emotional expressions that make Sweeny Todd a desirable watch!
This is a film that will make you enjoy it through the sheer abundance of ingenuity and creativity. If you haven’t had the chance yet, try to free up some time and watch it. I can promise that you shall not regret the decision!
